Digital Rights Training for Activists and Journalists

The term Digital Rights is a catchphrase for those rights that are essential for human participation in the digital environment. They refer to the fundamental human rights and legal protections in the digital world. Simply put, they are an extension of human rights in the digital space and encompass both traditional rights adapted to the online context (such as freedom of expression, privacy, and non-discrimination) and new rights that have emerged in response to the unique challenges and opportunities presented by digital technologies (such as the right to access to the internet, protection from disinformation, and the right to participate in the digital economy).

Digital Rights: Applying Human Rights in the Digital Space

Human rights principles are fundamental norms and standards that seek to protect every human being. These principles are universal, indivisible, and interdependent, meaning they apply to everyone, everywhere, and cannot be compromised or traded off against one another. Historically, several efforts have been made to safeguard them through laws, policies, and actions by governments and civil society.

However, the rise of information and communication technologies (ICTs) has profoundly impacted how we interact and how human rights are perceived, implemented, and protected. On the one hand, ICTs have brought about positive legal, economic, and social changes. The internet, for example, has transformed how we communicate, access information, participate in society, and exercise our rights. On the other hand, however, ICTs have also created some challenges and risks. These technologies can be misused to undermine human rights and cause harm to individuals and society. Examples of these risks and challenges include cybercrime, privacy breaches, surveillance, the spread of misinformation, and the misuse of artificial intelligence technologies, among others.

Thus, it is unsurprising that the emergence of conflicts and rights violations in the digital realm has necessitated the need for a mechanism to uphold the rule of law and human rights principles to protect individuals when they interact in the digital space. However, there have been challenges in achieving this goal.

This course will provide an understanding of the fundamentals of digital rights, what they are and how they are implemented. It will equip course participants with the knowledge and tools to navigate the digital world safely, advocate for their rights, and fulfil their responsibilities as a digital citizen.
