e-RIGHTS project to host panel session on digital rights at the 81st ordinary session of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights in Banjul, The Gambia

The objective

The core objective of the e-Rights project is:

  • Strengthening digital rights in Nigeria for better protection of human rights defenders and population.
Expected outcomes
  • Human rights defenders recognise and are able to deal with the digital threats they face.
  • An enabling environment for the enjoyment of digital rights is established in Nigeria.
Actions Taken
  • Development of the “Closing Civic Spaces” digital platform for activists to report violations and build trust, accountability and transparency in Nigeria.
  • Capacity building for activists on digital rights, protection mechanisms and online safety tools.
  • Training lawyers and judges on international law and EU standards on digital rights.
  • Legal assistance for victims of violations or threats to their digital rights.
  • Drafting of a guide for digital rights reform in NIgeria through the mobilisation of a group of experts.
  • Advocacy at national and international level (ACHPR) to urge the Nigerian government to strengthen digital rights legislation based on international and EU standards.
  • Raising awareness on digital rights through the use of new technologies.
